Who We Are

Oklahoma Ballet Theatre was founded with a vision to cultivate excellence in classical ballet while creating meaningful opportunities for young artists and the broader Oklahoma community. As the parent organization of Oklahoma Youth Ballet and Oklahoma Dance Center, OBT exists to provide exceptional training, inspiring performances, and a strong artistic foundation rooted in discipline, integrity, artistry, and community. Inspired by the rich tradition of classical ballet and the enduring impact of arts education, Oklahoma Ballet Theatre is committed to making high-quality ballet accessible to families and artists throughout Oklahoma.

Our Mission

Oklahoma Ballet Theatre is dedicated to preserving the beauty and tradition of classical ballet while empowering the next generation of artists through education, mentorship, performance opportunities, and community outreach.

Our Why

We believe the arts matter.

We believe young people deserve access to beautiful, meaningful, and challenging artistic experiences that shape who they become both on and off the stage.  Ballet teaches discipline, resilience, grace, teamwork, confidence, and the pursuit of excellence - lessons that extend far beyond the studio walls.

In a world increasingly driven by distraction and speed, we believe there is profound value in preserving the timeless traditions of classical ballet and creating spaces where beauty, artistry, music, storytelling, and human connection can flourish.

Artistic Director

JOSHUA BROOKSHER

Joshua Brooksher is a distinguished ballet educator, former principal artist, and internationally respected authority in classical ballet pedagogy. Born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, he began his early training at Ballet Etudes and Jeanne’s School of Dance before earning a full scholarship at age thirteen to attend the prestigious Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., one of the world’s foremost institutions for professional ballet training.

As a student in the Academy’s accelerated professional program, Mr. Brooksher received a comprehensive conservatory education rooted in the Vaganova Method. His studies encompassed ballet technique, repertoire, pas de deux, pedagogical theory, historical court dance, character dance, contemporary movement, music theory, nutrition, kinesiology, injury prevention, Pilates, Gyrotonics, and the visual arts. He graduated from the Kirov Academy with High Honors and earned a Certificate of Merit from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.

During his formative years at the Academy, Mr. Brooksher had the rare opportunity to study under some of the most influential masters of classical ballet. Among these mentors, none had a greater impact on his artistic development than Rudolf Kharatian, a graduate of the famed Vaganova Choreographic Institute and protégé of the legendary Alexander Pushkin. This lineage of excellence continues to inform Mr. Brooksher’s teaching philosophy and dedication to preserving the highest standards of classical ballet education.

Mr. Brooksher enjoyed an accomplished professional performing career with renowned companies including The Kirov Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Internationale, Boston Ballet, Texas Ballet Theater, and Ballet Arizona. Throughout his career he performed leading roles in the classical repertoire and collaborated with many of the most respected choreographers and artists of his generation. Widely recognized as an exceptional partner, he is especially fond of his portrayal of Albrecht in Giselle, a role he considers among the most rewarding of his career.

While his accomplishments as a performer are significant, teaching has always been Mr. Brooksher’s true calling. Even as a young dancer, his remarkable attention to detail and natural ability to mentor others distinguished him among his peers. Throughout his performing career, he regularly returned to Arizona to teach and coach students at Ballet Etudes and Phoenix School of Ballet, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to arts education.

Driven by a passion for developing the next generation of artists, Mr. Brooksher founded Brooksher Ballet and the National Academy of Classical Ballet in Mesa, Arizona. Through these organizations he provided aspiring dancers with access to elite professional training opportunities within their own community. Under his leadership, students have earned recognition at national and international competitions, gained admission to prestigious conservatories and universities, and secured professional contracts with ballet companies throughout the world.

As an educator, Mr. Brooksher has been involved in every aspect of building and leading successful pre-professional training programs. His responsibilities have included teaching and coaching all levels of a six-year Vaganova-based curriculum, curriculum and syllabus development, choreography, faculty mentorship, and organizational leadership. His reputation for excellence has made him a sought-after teacher, coach, and consultant within the classical ballet community.

At the heart of Mr. Brooksher’s work is a deeply held belief that talented young artists should not have to leave their families and support systems in order to pursue professional-level training. As a devoted father of two and a person who values family above all else, he is passionate about creating opportunities for students to receive world-class instruction close to home. His mission is to provide a clear pathway for aspiring dancers to achieve professional success while remaining connected to the people and communities that support them. This philosophy continues to guide every aspect of his educational and artistic endeavors.

Today, Mr. Brooksher serves as Founder and Artistic Director of Oklahoma Ballet Theatre and Oklahoma Youth Ballet and continues to contribute to the advancement of classical ballet education on both national and international levels. He is a member of the International Dance Council (CID), the official dance organization of UNESCO, and serves as a Pedagogy Specialist for the Classical Dance Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting excellence in classical ballet training through teacher education and advocacy for sound pedagogical practices.

In addition, Mr. Brooksher served as Associate Artistic Director of the Kirov Academy of Ballet, his alma mater, where he played a vital role in the operation of one of the world’s premier international boarding schools for dance. His responsibilities extended across all aspects of institutional leadership, including artistic planning, faculty development, curriculum oversight, student mentorship, and organizational administration.

Through his work as a performer, educator, director, and mentor, Joshua Brooksher has dedicated his life to preserving the traditions of classical ballet while creating meaningful opportunities for future generations of artists. His commitment to excellence, family, and accessible professional training continues to shape the lives of young dancers and strengthen the cultural landscape of the communities he serves.
